Battle of New york city
The battle of New York City occurred from August to September of 1776. While beating the Americans at Long Island, the British forced George Washington and his troops up along New York. Washington retreated into Manhattan where he used the first submarine ever in war to try to sink the British ships that were blockading the island. Washington was unsuccessful and gave the British the chance to surround Washington but he managed to escape. Over time Washington and his American troops had to withdraw from the battle due to more British troops arriving. The importance of this battle was England was able to gain tactical advantage. England took 3,000 prisoners with them as well as gaining a major port city. The American Army was divided into North and South. They were stranded in the winter months in 1776 and 1777.
