How Did the Revolution Come About? the british did many things to upset the colonists. they passed many laws that were unjust to the colonist.
one act they passed was called the revenue act of 1764, also known as the sugar act. this act put a tax on imports such as sugar, coffee, wine and tea.
another act they passed was called the townshend act of 1767. this act put a high tax on tea, glass, lead, paper, and paint. this act showed that PARLIAMENT had power over the colonies. the colonist boycotted and refused to buy british goods. this act also included writs of assistance which allowed soldiers to search your house for smuggled goods whenever they wanted to.
one of the lasts acts the british passed that really upset the colonists was the intolerable acts of 1774. this act ENTAILED four laws. the first law was the british closed the ports of boston until the debt was paid. the colonist were also not aloud to hold town meetings. the third law was the new quartering act which made the colonist provide home a home and food for the british soldiers. the lat law was that the british colonists and officials could be tried in english courts.
these acts along with many other made the colonist to draw up the DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE. the declaration of independence was approved july 4, 1776. the committee of writers consisted of sherman, livingston, franklin, john adams and the main author thomas jefferson. there were three major purposes to this document. one was separation from king George, they wanted a government where all men were treated equal and the people had UNALIENABLE rights, and lastly it had a formal declaration of war. the signers risked their lives to fight for their freedom.
